Is Mother's day Haram in Islam?

If you were born Muslim, you probably already know the answer but to those who are new to Islam, lets answer the popular question, "Is Mother's day Haram?"

Mother’s Day is celebrated annually in many countries to honour and appreciate mothers. It’s often marked by giving flowers, cards, or gifts, and spending time with one’s mother to show love and gratitude.

The origins of Mother's Day trace back to Western traditions and are rooted in non-Islamic cultural practices. Over time, it has become a widely adopted secular holiday, detached from its original religious background.

However, in Islam, the love, respect, and honour owed to mothers is not confined to a single day. Islam already places immense importance on mothers—so much so that the Prophet ﷺ said, "Paradise lies at the feet of your mother." (Ahmad)

While expressing appreciation is encouraged in Islam, setting aside one specific day influenced by other cultures and elevating it above all others can be seen as an innovation (bid’ah) or Haram. For this reason, many scholars consider celebrating Mother’s Day with that intention to be discouraged or even impermissible.

That said, Islam urges us to honour and care for our mothers every day—with kind words, time, gifts, and service. These acts should not be reserved for one calendar day dictated by societal trends.

True love and gratitude for your mother isn’t measured by a date, but by your daily actions.
