What to pack for umrah women?

Alhamdulillah, if you're reading this, you're preparing for one of the most beautiful journeys of your life. In sha'Allah, your days will be full of ibadah, long walks, and moving between the heat outside and the cold air-conditioning of the Haram. A good packing list takes one worry off your plate, so your heart can stay with your worship.

This guide covers what to pack as a woman, from what to wear to what to leave at home. We've linked the Fajr Noor pieces that suit the journey.

Before you pack: three principles

• Pack light. You'll carry your own bags, and you'll want space for zamzam and gifts on the way home.
• Choose comfort over everything. Loose, breathable and easy to move in.
• Know the basics of ihram for women. There's no special garment for women. Your normal modest clothing is your ihram, and many sisters choose white or soft neutrals, though it isn't required. Scholars generally advise that the face isn't covered with a niqab and gloves aren't worn while in ihram. Rulings can differ by madhhab, so confirm with your scholar or group leader.

1. Clothing

Abayas (3 to 4). Look for lightweight, flowy fabrics in lighter shades that reflect the sun. Our picks:

Under abayas (2 to 3). A slip or under abaya keeps your outer layer from clinging in the heat, and it's easy to wash and dry overnight.

Hijabs (5 to 7). Choose soft, breathable fabrics that stay in place through long days.

• Several pairs of socks
• Comfortable, easy slip-on footwear (you'll be walking for hours and leaving your shoes at entrances)
• 2 sets of light loungewear and enough underwear for the whole trip

2. Ibadah essentials

3. Toiletries (unscented)

Once you're in ihram, fragrance is off the table, so pack fragrance-free versions of:

• Soap, shampoo, deodorant, moisturiser and laundry detergent
• Sunscreen and lip balm
• Foot cream, blister plasters and a small tube of anti-chafe balm
• Wet wipes, tissues, hair ties, a travel comb and hand sanitiser
• Sanitary products, more than you think you'll need
• A small pair of scissors in your checked luggage. Women trim about a fingertip's length of hair to complete Umrah. Scissors can't go in hand luggage.

Save your attar and perfume for after you've completed your Umrah.

4. Health and comfort

• Any regular medication, plus a copy of your prescriptions
• Paracetamol, throat lozenges and rehydration sachets (the "Umrah cough" is real)
• A few face masks
• A reusable water bottle and a cooling towel or small handheld fan
• Comfortable insoles

5. Bags and tech

• A zip-up crossbody bag for daily essentials
• A small foldable backpack
• A shoe bag for the times you need to carry your shoes
• A power bank and a universal adaptor
• A lanyard or pouch for your hotel key card and ID
• The official Nusuk app and offline maps downloaded before you leave

6. Documents and money

• Passport with sufficient validity, visa or permit, and booking confirmations
• Vaccination certificates and travel insurance
• Printed and digital copies of everything
• A small amount of Saudi riyals in cash, plus a bank card
• Emergency contacts and your group leader's number

Requirements can change, so check the current rules with your travel agent or the Saudi embassy before you fly.

7. For the journey home

Leave room in your suitcase for zamzam, dates and gifts. A few ideas from us:

What to leave behind

Heavily embellished abayas, excess jewellery, scented products and anything you'd be upset to lose. Bring your duas, leave the drama.
