Amanah (أمانة) is the Arabic word for trust. In Islam it means anything that has been entrusted to you, together with the responsibility to protect it, use it rightly and answer for it before Allah.
It is the word behind a borrowed item returned, a secret kept and a promise honoured. It is also, according to the Quran, the weight that the heavens, the earth and the mountains declined and that humankind accepted. This guide explains the meaning of amanah, what counts as an amanah, how it differs from rizq and why carrying it does not require perfection. It includes passages from Rizq & Amanah by s.hukr, the book we publish at Fajr Noor.
Amanah Meaning in Arabic
Amanah comes from the Arabic root a-m-n, the same root that gives us iman (faith), amn (safety and security) and mu’min (believer). The overlap is no accident. Trust and safety belong together: a person with amanah is someone others feel safe around, and faith is the safest place you can put your trust.
The plural is amanat, meaning trusts. The word is usually translated as trust, honesty or faithfulness, but the book points out that none of those captures the whole picture:
“Amanah is both responsibility and trust. The two cannot be separated.”
“In Islam, Amanah is the acceptance of a trust with full awareness that you will be held accountable for how you use it.”
s.hukr, Rizq & Amanah
Before revelation, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was known among his people as al-Amin, the trustworthy. The early biographies record that when he left Makkah for Madinah, he asked Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) to stay behind and return the belongings people had left with him for safekeeping, even though many of those same people opposed him. That is amanah in a single scene.
Amanah in the Quran: The Trust Offered to the Heavens and the Earth
The most profound verse on the subject is in Surah Al-Ahzab:
“Indeed, We offered the Trust to the heavens and the earth and the mountains, and they refused to bear it and feared it; but mankind undertook it. Indeed, he was unjust and ignorant.” (Quran 33:72)
So what was this trust? Rizq & Amanah answers in plain language:
“It is the trust of moral responsibility. The trust of choice. The trust of being able to obey or disobey.”
“Amanah is not just ‘don’t lie’ and ‘be trustworthy.’ Amanah is the entire reality of being human.”
s.hukr, Rizq & Amanah
The book notes that the heavens, the earth and the mountains declined not out of rebellion but out of fear, because they understood the weight of accountability. It also reads the closing words of the verse, “unjust and ignorant”, as a warning rather than an insult:
“Allah describes mankind as unjust and ignorant in this verse, not as an insult, but as a warning. Unjust when we betray the trust. Ignorant when we underestimate its weight.”
Elsewhere the Quran commands, “Indeed, Allah commands you to render trusts to whom they are due” (Quran 4:58), and warns, “O you who have believed, do not betray Allah and the Messenger or betray your trusts while you know [the consequence]” (Quran 8:27).
What Counts as an Amanah?
If amanah is the entire reality of being human, the list of things it covers is long. The book puts it in six short lines:
“Your salah is an Amanah.
Your tongue is an Amanah.
Your money is an Amanah.
Your body is an Amanah.
Your time is an Amanah.
Your spouse is an Amanah.”s.hukr, Rizq & Amanah
It then adds the quieter ones: “Even conversations and secrets you have with family, friends and the opposite gender are an Amanah that you can’t reveal to everyone.”
Amanah towards Allah
Your faith, your prayer, and how you use the free will you were given. The book says the trust begins here: “This is why Amanah begins with your relationship with Allah before it ever reaches your relationship with people.”
Amanah towards other people
Borrowed items and deposits returned, confidences kept, promises honoured, and the duties of your role. The book names some of the most common: “Property left with you by others, company secrets, children in your care, obligation to uphold morality.”
Amanah towards yourself
Your body, your time, your tongue and your money are all on loan. The Prophet ﷺ taught that your body has a right over you (Sahih al-Bukhari), which is why looking after your health is part of amanah and not a distraction from it.
Amanah Is Measured in Private
It is easy to look trustworthy. It is harder to be trustworthy when no one can see. The book is direct about this:
“A man can betray Amanah while smiling. He can betray it while being admired. Amanah is not measured by public image. It is measured by what you do when nobody is watching except Allah.”
s.hukr, Rizq & Amanah
That is the quiet test of amanah. Reputation is what people say about you. Amanah is what you did with the trust when the room was empty.
Everyone Is a Shepherd: Amanah and Leadership
The Prophet ﷺ said, “Every one of you is a shepherd and is responsible for his flock.” The hadith goes on to name the ruler over his people, the man over his family and the woman over her husband’s home and children. (Sahih al-Bukhari 7138, Sahih Muslim 1829)
Parents, spouses, managers, teachers and friends all hold flocks of different sizes. In marriage the responsibility runs both ways. Each spouse is a shepherd, and each is also, in a sense, the other’s amanah.
You Do Not Need to Be Perfect
After pages on accountability, the book ends the discussion with a mercy:
“Accepting Amanah does not mean you need to be perfect. It means you need to be sincere.”
s.hukr, Rizq & Amanah
If the weight of it feels heavy, start small. Here are five ways to honour your amanah this week:
- Pray on time. Your salah is an amanah.
- Guard your tongue. Before you speak, ask whether it is true and whether it is yours to share.
- Return what you borrowed. And keep the promise you made casually.
- Keep the secret you were told. Even the small ones.
- Look after your body and your hours. Both were lent to you.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does amanah mean in Islam?
Amanah means trust. In Islam it is anything entrusted to you, along with the responsibility to protect it, use it rightly and answer for it before Allah. It covers your relationship with Allah, with other people and with yourself.
What does Al-Amanah mean?
Al-Amanah means “the Trust”. It is the name for the trust that Allah offered to the heavens, the earth and the mountains, and that mankind accepted (Quran 33:72). The Prophet ﷺ was known as al-Amin, the trustworthy, from the same root.
Is your body an amanah?
Yes. Rizq & Amanah lists your body among the trusts you will answer for, and the Prophet ﷺ taught that your body has a right over you. Caring for your health is part of fulfilling that trust.
Is a wife an amanah?
Marriage is an amanah for both spouses. The book lists your spouse among your trusts, and in his farewell sermon the Prophet ﷺ told believers to fear Allah regarding women, who were taken in marriage “by the trust of Allah” (Sahih Muslim 1218). The hadith of the shepherd also makes a woman responsible for her husband’s home and children, so the responsibility runs both ways.
What is the difference between rizq and amanah?
Rizq is the provision Allah gives you. Amanah is the responsibility and accountability that come with what is placed in your care. Most rizq is also an amanah, but not all of it: provisions in Jannah and rizq written for others carry no amanah, while things like secrets and children in your care are amanah without being rizq.
Is amanah the same as trust?
Close, but not identical. Amanah is trust and responsibility together. As the book puts it, the two cannot be separated, because a trust is only meaningful when it comes with responsibility.
What is the amanah in Surah Al-Ahzab 33:72?
Scholars have described it in several ways. Rizq & Amanah describes it as the trust of moral responsibility, of choice and of being able to obey or disobey, which is what separates people from both animals and angels.
What does amanah mean in Malay and Indonesian?
In Malay and Indonesian, amanah is an everyday word for a trust, a mandate or a duty given to you. It comes from the same Arabic word and carries the same sense of responsibility.
